One of the most frequently asked questions that I receive during wedding season is, “What if it rains?”
This is a great question—especially during these autumn months! However, I want to reassure you that even rainy day weddings can result in beautiful portraits and bright colors in your images. Overcast skies mean rich and vibrant shades. I know rain isn’t ideal for a wedding day, but if it happens, it happens. And rest assured, it’s going to be just fine.
Even knowing this, I realize that no bride would wish for rain on their big day. If rain is in the forecast (or just a possibility to be expected given the season), here are a few things you can do to ensure that it will just be part of the beautiful memories, instead of a catastrophe.
Plan Ahead
Have a rain plan for your venue. See if there are covered areas you can use for portraits in the event of a shower. (All I need to create natural light portraits during rainy day weddings is a porch. That’s it!) Decide what you want your vendors to do if it rains—and then let them do it. That way, if the raindrops start to fall, you don’t have to worry about it. It’s all taken care of!
Trust Your Photographer
On that note, let me worry about the pictures! You have enough to think about. If there is a chance of rain, I’ll be sure to do some extra scouting to find one or two covered locations that we can use for your first look, romantic portraits, and bridal party portraits.
Be Flexible
Be flexible and embrace the unexpected. No matter how well you plan, there will be things that don’t work out the way you thought they would. And that’s okay! Build a little bit of wiggle room into your timeline, and then just let the day unfold. Rain or no, your day will be beautiful if you stay present and focused on your partner and your love for each other.
Every Cloud Has a Silver Lining
Remember, from the point of view of your photographer, clouds really do have a silver lining and they are not a problem when it comes to capturing incredible wedding photos! Rainy day weddings sometimes turn out to be favorites of mine, because the pictures are just so gorgeous! So relax, enjoy your day, and know that you are in good hands no matter what the weather.
