Preparing For Your Family Session:
What to Expect and What to Wear
If you have littles ones in your session, it’s important we keep them happy. If they start to get fussy, I will redirect the session to refocus and get them happy again. It is best to help me keep the session lighthearted and fun the the little ones.
Your session time is set in direct correlation with the angle of the sun, so it is important to start shooting on time. Arrive 10-15 mins before you planned start time to ensure everyone is dressed and ready to go.
This is easy to forget! All natural, french manicure, pale pink, or nude photograph best.
Avoid snacks that will cause colors to run down their mouths or dye their teeth and tongue or ones that take a while to chew. Tan colored puffs or small marshmallows are great options. It’s important to keep these snacks hidden until we absolutely need them to ensure they are not wanting them the entire session.
What you wear for your session is very important to the overall look in your images. Although something may look great in person, it doesn’t always mean it will photograph well. Please ready the below suggestions carefully, and refer back to them as you are selecting your outfits.
Let's choose Mom’s dress first, and then select everyone else’s outfits to coordinate. I highly ecommend wearing a flowy maxi or high- low dress that covers your knees as these types of dresses photograph best.
Floral prints photography beautifully and make it easy to coordinate every else with solid fabrics. If you choose to go with a floral print it is important to select one with a small pattern, so it is not distracting in your photos.
Young toddlers always look best in rompers and dresses. Cotten, linen, and gauze fabrics all photograph beautifully.
For baby girls who are not walking yet and will be held the whole session, I recommend a romper rather than a dress, so it doesn’t ride up while being held. For older boys, shorts or pants and nice tshirt or henley are great!
Casual khakis or colored pants (as opposed to more structured work khakis) paired with a nice t-shirt or henley photographs well.
Avoid wearing shorts, patterns, and watches. Make sure your phone is not in your pocket.
In the warmer months, neutral sandals work great (off white, cognac, light tan, gray, etc.) In colder months boots or closed toe shoes in the same colors photograph well. If you have a little one who isn’t walking, bare feet is best.
I recommend wearing no jewelry or very minimal jewelry in your photos as they can be distracting to the overall images. However, if you have a spacial piece of jewelry you walls were and want in your images, feel free to wear that. Dads, do not wear a watch as they reflect light back into the camera and are distracting in the photos.
Avoid bright or bold colors in your outfits. Earth tones, neutrals, and muted pastels photograph best with my photographic style. Stay away from bright white. Ivory and off white photograph much better. I recommend finding a dress you love and basing the color palette off that.
